In 1975, Yamaha created the very first single-shock, production motocross bike ever. This was the beginning of the Yamaha Monocross machines that changed motocross forever. The YZ’s of this time were near replicas of “Works Bikes” with their aluminium fuel tanks and light weight, only lacking magnesium engine cases and some titanium pieces.

These models ran from 1969 with the KO model to the end of 1971 with the K1 model. They were designed as a more serious off-road machine, than other more fashionable models. The chassis re-design had a much stronger double cradle arrangement,it has longer travel suspension and mudguards that are placed high further giving credence to their off road credentials. Featuring re-tuned engines.

The SL125 when launched went straight to the best sellers chart, in North America. This was a serious off road model, and weighs just 91kg. Easy and quick handling. The larger, higher torque 125 engine made this easier to ride than it’s higher revving little brother the SL100.
The styling has a long travel suspension was shown off to good effect with high mounted mudguards, and the exhaust was fitted with the mandatory spark arrester necessary for off-road riding in the backlands of the USA.
